about
Alderman Emma Mitts and Mayor Lori Lightfoot ignored West Side youth who fought for #NoCopAcademy, and the ribbon cutting took place with no notice to the neighborhood on January 25, 2023. Hundreds of cops will train at this $128 million facility, which includes a "mock neighborhood," while neighbors are contending with rapidly rising food and housing costs, crumbling infrastructure, unreliable public transportation, and continued disinvestment and racist treatment by the City. Time and again, the young people of the West Side offered alternatives and demanded no cop academy, and they were ignored by those in power. It's hard to imagine something like this coming to a North Side neighborhood, but we're told we should be grateful simply that an empty lot is being filled at all.
I hope this song reminds my fellow abolitionists that we have power, too, even when we feel defeated. Me & my friends have a vision for a brighter way.
